Changes in products with DVGW Drinking Water Approval
06.03.2025The new DVGW directive 2024/367 introduces changes to the approval of products in the drinking water sector. As your partner for high-quality valve solutions, we would like to inform you early on about the implications and keep you up to date, ensuring that you are well prepared.
Policy changes
The tightening of the Drinking Water Ordinance affects, among other things, the lead content in drinking water (reducing the lead content from 10 to 5 µg), which indirectly impacts brass materials and, due to other substances, also the sealing materials used in ball valves.
Since early 2023, WESA has been using PTFE seals and EPDM7008 O-rings in the drinking water sector, complying with the latest testing standards according to KTW-BWGL, EN16421 (formerly W270), and the latest requirements of the German Environment Agency (UBA) in Berlin.
The decision 2024/367, published in the Official Journal of the EU in April 2024, stipulates that only materials listed in the EU Positive List (EUPL) may be used for contact with drinking water. Annex II of this directive includes, among others, the brass alloy CW510L.
The currently used brass material CW617N will be replaced by the CW510L brass alloy for productions starting in Q4/2025.
Transitional regulation
A transitional regulation applies until 31 December 2026 for the use of the brass material CW617N.
Common questions
How do we avoid mixed stock?
The transitional regulation provides a time frame to reduce inventory and ensure that, in the future, only materials with the latest approvals are placed on the market.
Will new article numbers be necessary?
A new article number is not required, as there are no changes to shape, fit, or function. When switching materials, the previous material designation CW617N on the ball valve body will be replaced with the new CW510L. This marking, along with the production date, ensures clear differentiation and prevents mix-ups.
